Citizenship is a state of mind.<\/p>\n

This state of mind may either be controlled from outside (outside-in) or may be controlled from within (inside-out).<\/p>\n

When an individual operates in the ‘citizen state of mind’ because everyone around him is also acting similarly, then such an individual may be said to be a fair-weather citizen.<\/p>\n

However when an individual operates in the ‘citizen state of mind’ irrespective of the external circumstances, then such an individual may be said to be a true citizen.<\/p>\n

II<\/strong><\/p>\n

How do true citizens manage to retain the ‘citizen state of mind’ through ups and downs in the external world?<\/p>\n

They are able to do so, because they shift the basis of their identity. Put differently, they have a fundamentally different answer to the question, “who am I?”<\/p>\n

When we ask ourselves “who am I?”, most individuals answer at a functional level (power, relationship, position, membership, activities)
\n…I am in charge of ..
\n…I am an expert of..
\n…I am an AGM, etc.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, a few individuals answer this question at a being level.
\n…I stand for ..
\n…My intention is to ..
\n…My goal is ..<\/p>\n

When these individuals answer the question “who am I” from a ‘being’ level – they are in essence, answering this question from deep within themselves.<\/p>\n

Such individuals, who have shifted their identity from their numerous functional identities (father, son, boss, subordinate, position, etc.), to their deeper identities, are able to retain a citizen state of mind.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
