Stage 1
\nFulfillment at the Level of \u2018Personal Welfare\u2019<\/p>\n
In this stage, man seeks to achieve his own personal welfare. The very seeking of \u2018personal\u2019 welfare implies that he sees himself as a psycho-social creature primarily, with intellectual capacities in the service of acquisition of psycho-social benefits.<\/p>\n
Further, he may at this stage view himself as within the broad control of a Creator\/ Intelligent Universe and may seek to be in harmony with that larger Good while pursuing his personal welfare.<\/p>\n
Stage 2
\nFulfillment at the Level of \u2018Knowledge\u2019<\/p>\n
In this stage, man seeks to understand what lies beneath the evanescent behavior of life. This \u2018seeking to understand\u2019 becomes man\u2019s search for greater and deeper perception of reality. Through this perception, he hopes to find his true identity and relationship with the universe.<\/p>\n
In this journey, he gradually recognizes that the existing order of things are \u2018not quite what they appear\u2019. First he sees that beneath \u2018matter\u2019 lies a deeper order of \u2018knowledge\/models that drive matter\u2019. Beneath models that drive reality lies an even deeper order of spiritual ideas that give birth to these models and organize themselves in multiple ways to \u2018manifest as reality\u2019. As this journey comes to a close, the true order of reality manifests itself wholly to the seeker.<\/p>\n
Stage 3
\nFulfillment at the Level of \u2018Living\u2019<\/p>\n
As the assimilation of knowledge becomes complete, man begins to discover for himself that the product of education is not knowledge but the \u2018science of engagement\u2019 \u2013 engagement with life, engagement with matter, engagement with other human beings, and engagement with one\u2019s own desires and values.<\/p>\n
As the human being comes face to face with this \u2018science of engagement\u2019, he becomes capable of a state of continuous education or evolution. At this point of time, he or she is no longer \u2018seeking\u2019 knowledge or attempting to \u2018apply\u2019 knowledge. He or she is now capable of engaging through knowledge with himself, society, and other dimensions of an ever complex universe. In this state, there is no distinction between education and the human being.<\/p>\n
Stage 4
\nFulfillment at the Level of \u2018Enablement\u2019<\/p>\n
As one lives in the ideal, one also seeks to enable others to live in the ideal. One lives by the maxim of \u201cbe and make\u201d.<\/p>\n
In this state one does not \u2018calculate\u2019 knowledge in terms of a distinct quantity. One has transcended knowledge and now sees it as a \u2018living quality\u2019 to be lived oneself and transmitted to those around by one\u2019s action and character.<\/p>\n
This transition of a human being from Level 1 to Level 4 is the purpose of secular education.<\/p>\n
A society which masters an education that accomplishes this transition on a \u201cmass basis\u201d will be a society that will also destroy the bondages of both poverty at one end, and incapacity to enjoy wealth effectively at the other.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
