About
Srinivas Venkatram works on the foundational thinking for a post-knowledge society. When intelligence is abundant and knowledge can be shaped into products almost in real time, knowledge itself stops being scarce. What becomes scarce is the human capacity to internalise knowledge and be changed by it, in people and in the institutions they build. That is the enquiry he has pursued for more than thirty years: how human beings and institutions can become capable of conscious evolution.
His questions are practical ones. Why does knowledge so often fail to change the people who receive it? What must change inside a person for new action to become possible? How can work, schools and public institutions become places where people grow? And what must human thinking become when machines can think alongside us?

The path
He graduated from IIT Bombay in 1987 and from IIM Ahmedabad in 1989, and began as an entrepreneur in industry research. He co-founded INFAC, which was acquired by CRISIL in 1997. Then he turned from markets to people. In the mid-1990s he set up Illumine, a lab in Mumbai that builds programmes, tools and knowledge platforms from these ideas and tests them at scale with government, schools, universities and companies. Illumine’s programmes are reported to have reached more than five million people: government servants, schoolchildren, university students, professionals and communities.
The ideas
His inquiries — Assimilation, Cognitive Enablement, Enablement Thinking, the Contributor Ethic, the Collective Mind, Becoming — have grown out of that work rather than ahead of it. An early visit to Silicon Valley, as the Illumine journey began, sharpened the question that still drives him: the distance between knowledge being available and knowledge being internalised. His thinking draws deeply on the Practical Vedanta of Swami Vivekananda and Swami Ranganathananda: the conviction that every person carries more potential than they know, and that it can be awakened in daily life and work.
Recognition and books
He has spoken at the SOL Global Forum in Oman, the Positive Economy Forum in Italy and the Ramakrishna Vedanta Centre in the UK, and has been interviewed on BBC Radio. He received an Honorary D.Litt. from the Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute in 2019, and the Vivekananda Award of the Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture in 2022.
His books include Awakening the Nation (2025). Cognitive Enablement: How We Must Know in the Age of AI and The Contributor Ethic are forthcoming.
