Enablement Thinking
There are three ways to help someone: do it for them, tell them how, or enable them to do it themselves. Srinivas Venkatram has built most of his work on the third.
Enablement Thinking holds that the highest form of service is to enable: to create the conditions in which people discover what they can do and grow into it. Srinivas calls it his master idea, and most of his later work sits inside it.
The inquiry
The central problem in the world of work, Srinivas argued in 2005, is the gap between learning and doing: people learn far more than they ever turn into action. Closing it means moving from built environments, which fix how people must behave, to support ecologies, which honour their freedom to grow.
By 2014 he was describing enablement as a new paradigm of service. Customer service becomes customer enablement, which is far wider than customer experience. Training becomes capacity building. Leadership becomes enabling other people’s creative faith. In each case the measure moves from what was delivered to what the other person can now do. He describes enablement as a three-sided event — the enabler, the enabled and the act of enablement — that treats people as creators of their own destiny rather than as needy recipients. What holds them back is usually an enablement gap, not a skill gap.
Distinctions
- The learning-doing gap Why knowledge so rarely becomes action.
- Support ecologies Environments that support growth rather than prescribe behaviour.
- Enablement gaps, not skill gaps What actually holds people back.
- Customer enablement Serving people by making them more able, not more dependent.
- Precision Change designed one specific shift at a time, so that it can reach millions of people.
Why it matters now
As AI does more and more for people, every system faces one test: does it leave people more able, or more dependent? Every advance in automation, Srinivas argues, must be matched by an advance in enablement.
How the inquiry developed
- 2004–05The learning-doing gap; from built environments to support ecologies.
- 2006–08The enabling mind; design leadership; precision knowledge interventions.
- 2011Enablement Thinking first developed as a book.
- 2014Towards Enablement: enablement as a new paradigm of service.
- 2016–18The design of engagements; collective enablement; enablement defined as a three-sided event.
- 2022Enablement in the age of AI.
- 2026From learning outcomes to enablement outcomes; a proposed science of enablement.
In practice
Enablement is the working principle of Illumine’s large programmes with government, including Mission Karmayogi, and of its work with schools, universities and companies.
